James MacDonald:

– Welcome to the Newy Tech Jobs Update for October, 2020. We’re a little bit late, mid-November now, so I will make this one real quick.

126 jobs posted on SEEK in the technology space in October in Newcastle. So that is up 14% month-on-month, so October really strong up 14% on September, and only down 4% year-on-year. So what we’re seeing is pretty much the Newcastle tech scene is back to pretty well the same levels as the year prior.

The year prior was very strong. So the Newcastle technology community is still very candidate-short. A lot of companies looking to hire, a lot of companies advertising for their roles. So to give you a bit of an overview, check out the chart. What we can see is the start of this year we were looking at a really, really strong increase. Like January always a little bit low, people coming back, people not looking to hire until sort of everything kicks off after Australia Day long weekend. February really, really strong. And then COVID hit and you’re seeing a really sharp drop off, a lot of people and a lot of companies just a bit of risk around, a lot of hesitation on hiring then, people putting projects on hold and roles on hold. Since then, we’ve just seen a consistent rise and rise and rise and rise.

I think October might be the last month that we see a rise, November and December is probably where we start to see it peel off again. November should be pretty similar to October. But then December, January will be a low as companies don’t look to advertise and hire then. But I think it’s been a really, really strong sign, like the graph can show, we’ve consistently grown from sort of the depths of COVID there.

So overall a very strong result for October. So again like the trend for this year, or especially post-COVID has been more private companies advertising than recruiters. I think that’s been a trend that we’ve been seeing over the past few months and that hasn’t changed again in October.

Again the highest jobs in demand are software developers, to the point where if you are a software developer in Newcastle and are not absolutely loving your job, we work across the road from the Edwards, just in that direction, Open offer for beer, wine, coffee, drink of your choice.

If you’re not loving your job, come and have a beverage with me, we can talk about the current roles that are working in Newcastle. And I can nearly guarantee you that we’d be able to set you up with an interview at least, at one company. There’s more than half a dozen, closer to a dozen companies we’re working with at the moment, looking to hire software developers, different tech stacks, different types of projects.

So if you’re not absolutely loving your job or you are looking for something different to start 2020, please take me up on that offer. Hit me up on LinkedIn in my DMs there or email me, I’m more than happy to have that conversation with you and see if we can’t help you out, start 2021 with a fresh new job.

Thanks again for listening today. We’ll be back for a November update, but yeah positive signs again for Newcastle tech scene during October.
