This is the role for you if:
- You think of building software as a craft to be mastered
- Well-designed and well-written software makes you happy
- You love the “people” side of software. You get a kick out of seeing how the software you write truly makes people’s lives easier
- You have a passion for quality > quantity
- You value flexibility and true work-life balance
You know the building, the large glass-fronted one with the green logo on Honeysuckle Drive. Do you know what’s going on inside from a software development perspective though?
The NIB technology teams have a significant focus on quality software and quality software practices. The teams building the software you’ll be working on have a responsibility for not only building it but maintaining it, so they want to do it right.
As a Software Developer in the Core team, you’ll be working on apps that are used by internal customers, servicing the core business. A 'typical' day will see you designing and writing software, in collaboration with a variety of disciplines – QA Engineers, Business Analysts, Designers, and so on.
You’ll be involved not only in the software itself but in how it’s delivered, playing a big part in improving and maintaining our continuous integration and delivery pipeline.
When we’re talking technologies, the team is building software in Ruby and are using more and more of the AWS tools. If you don’t have experience with Ruby this is by no means a deal-breaker, the team is looking for strong developers over a particular language experience.
WHO WILL YOU BE WORKING WITH?
The team you’ll be working with, the manager you’ll be working for are significant motivators for many people. At a high level, this team has very low staff turnover and has senior developers who you can bounce ideas off or be mentored by depending on your experience.
I could write you a detailed description of the team, the manager, as well as the QA team you’ll be working alongside or…you’ll get a better idea by watching a short interview I recently did with David Cathcart the Software Development Manager this role will report to. Find the video at the top of this page.
In the interview, you’ll hear why David has stayed with NIB for 7 years, what a day looks like for developers in the core apps team, the projects they are working on, and what are the motivators driving the team members.
EXPERIENCE THAT’LL SET YOU UP FOR SUCCESS:
These aren’t all necessary but will give you an even better idea of whether you’ll be a great fit.
- real-world experience in software development
- in a perfect world, experience using Ruby though this isn’t a necessity
- experience working with AWS
- strong communication skill (not the role for a developer who likes to work solo)
This really is a great opportunity to join a forward-thinking, innovative business where your ideas can really make an impact. If you are keen to work with talented and professional cross-functional agile teams I encourage you to apply here. We’re happy to look at interviewing pre-Christmas for a fresh start in 2020.
